New Command, Renewed Focus: Inside the Strategic Direction of 81 Division

In January 2026, Major General Adebayo Babalola assumed command as the 26th General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 81 Division, marking a new chapter in the leadership of one of Nigeria’s most strategically significant military formations. He succeeded Major General Farouk Umar Mijinyawa, inheriting a division central to safeguarding the nation’s economic nerve center.

The 81 Division’s Area of Responsibility (AOR) spans Lagos and Ogun states—regions widely regarded as the commercial heartbeat of Nigeria. This positioning places the division at the forefront of maintaining security stability in a densely populated and economically vital corridor.
Under its current leadership, the division has sustained a clear operational focus anchored on capacity building and inter-agency collaboration. Notably, high-level training initiatives, including activities surrounding the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference 2025, have remained pivotal in strengthening operational readiness. In parallel, joint security operations continue to play a critical role in addressing criminal activities within its jurisdiction.
Beyond operational engagements, attention has also been directed toward improving infrastructure and personnel welfare. Recent efforts have seen the commissioning of key projects such as new barracks accommodations, residential quarters, road networks, and solar-powered boreholes. These developments reflect an ongoing commitment to enhancing living conditions for personnel while supporting operational efficiency.
At the core of Major General Babalola’s leadership approach is a strong emphasis on discipline, professionalism, and adherence to lawful conduct. Troops have been consistently reminded of their duty to remain loyal to constituted authority, with clear warnings issued against involvement in unauthorized or illegal activities.
As the 81 Division continues to evolve under its new command, its dual focus on operational excellence and troop welfare underscores its critical role in sustaining security across Lagos and Ogun states.
