The British High Commission in Abuja hosted a reception on Thursday evening to celebrate the 78th birthday of His Majesty King Charles III and the strategic partnership between the UK and Nigeria.

Held under the theme “GREAT Partners for the Future,” the celebration brought together Nigerian government officials, business leaders, members of the diplomatic community and civil society to celebrate the ties between the UK and Nigeria and the shared ambition to build a stronger future together.

The event comes after a significant year for UK-Nigeria relations, including the State Visit in March, which demonstrated the depth of the relationship between our two countries and the importance of our people-to-people ties.

In his remarks, British High Commissioner H.E Pete Volwles said:

“The King’s Birthday is an opportunity not only to celebrate His Majesty, but also the remarkable relationship between the United Kingdom and Nigeria and the people who make that relationship thrive.

“Our partnership with Nigeria is a modern and forward-looking one. Whether through trade, education, innovation, security or culture, we are working together not only on today’s priorities, but on tomorrow’s opportunities.”

The UK-Nigeria Strategic Partnership is helping deepen cooperation across key areas including trade and investment, education, defence and security, migration and development.

The economic relationship continues to grow, with bilateral trade now standing at £7.3 billion, while strong cultural, family and diaspora connections continue to bring our two countries closer together.

The reception also featured an art gallery celebrating GREAT UK-Nigeria connections and provided an opportunity for partners from across government, business, culture and civil society to strengthen relationships and explore new opportunities for collaboration.

Together, the UK and Nigeria are looking to the future, building on a strong relationship to create greater opportunity, prosperity and lasting benefits for people in both our countries.
