In a bold demonstration of how technology is reshaping modern security architecture, Lagos State has intensified the deployment of drone surveillance systems across strategic locations in the state, creating a new layer of intelligence gathering, crime prevention and rapid response capabilities designed to protect one of Africa’s most populous cities and economic powerhouse. The initiative, being championed by Lagos State Government through the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) under the leadership of the Executive Secretary/CEO, Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan in collaboration with security agencies, represents one of the most ambitious sub-national investments in aerial surveillance technology in Nigeria. Beyond strengthening public safety, the programme is intended to support economic growth, investor confidence and social stability in a state widely regarded as Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre and West Africa’s economic hub.

Speaking on the expanding use of drone technology for security operations, the Executive Secretary/CEO of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF), Dr. Ogunsan, disclosed that Lagos has effectively taken security monitoring beyond conventional patrol operations by deploying sophisticated aerial surveillance assets capable of observing activities across vast areas of the state. “We now have eyes in the skies with drone technology,” Ogunsan declared. “Our drones are watching all over Lagos day and night to monitor activities. Criminals and criminally minded persons should be warned to stay away.” The statement reflects a growing shift among modern security institutions globally towards intelligence-led policing, where technology is increasingly deployed to detect threats before they materialize rather than merely responding after crimes have occurred.

According to Ogunsan, the deployment is not intended solely as a deterrent against criminal activity but also as an assurance to millions of residents, businesses and investors that Lagos remains firmly committed to maintaining a secure environment. “This is also to assure all law-abiding Lagosians that we are ahead of the game in terms of safety and security,” he said.

The assurance comes at a time when security agencies across the country are strengthening efforts to confront emerging threats ranging from organized crime, kidnapping and vandalism to cult-related violence, armed robbery and other forms of criminality. Recent operational records released by the Lagos State Police Command have highlighted the importance of intelligence gathering and technological support in modern law enforcement. Within the last month alone, the Command recorded major breakthroughs leading to the recovery of firearms, ammunition, stolen property, illicit substances and military camouflage uniforms, while several criminal suspects linked to armed robbery, cultism, vandalism and impersonation were arrested across different parts of the state.

It is observed that technology-driven surveillance systems such as drones significantly improve situational awareness, enabling security agencies to monitor difficult terrains, identify suspicious movements, track criminal activities and coordinate responses with greater precision. For Lagos, a sprawling megacity of more than 20 million residents with a complex network of highways, waterways, industrial zones and densely populated communities, aerial surveillance has become an increasingly critical security asset.

The LSSTF CEO, Dr. Ogunsan attributed the success of the initiative to the unwavering commitment of the Lagos State Government under Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, whom he described as a leading advocate of security investment and public safety.

“I want to thank the Executive Governor who has made security and safety his priority, our dear Governor of Lagos State, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu. He is the number one champion of safety and security in Lagos,” he said.

The LSSTF boss emphasized that the state’s security investments align with broader national objectives aimed at strengthening internal security and protecting citizens across Nigeria.”This is our own effort as a sub-national government to ensure safety and security for Nigeria as championed by our leader, my father, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR,” Ogunsan stated. “We are not going to allow criminals run us over in this country. This country belongs to God and to faithful Nigerians, and we will keep it so.”

Perhaps most significant was Ogunsan’s revelation that the drone programme has already delivered measurable operational outcomes. Citing a recent example, he disclosed that suspicious activities around Pan-Atlantic University, which generated public concern, were successfully patrolled through aerial surveillance technology. “To give you a specific example, the recent viral video recorded and circulated online depicting two masked individuals emerging from a forest area adjoining the Pan-Atlantic University were combed with drone surveillance facilitated by LSSTF as a proactive steps to support police operations within the axis,” he revealed.

The disclosure highlights the practical value of drone technology in supporting intelligence gathering and early threat detection, particularly in areas where conventional monitoring methods may be limited.

Ogunsan further warned individuals contemplating criminal activities in Lagos that security agencies are increasingly leveraging technology to monitor and neutralize threats. “Once again, I warn anybody who wants to foment trouble in Lagos to know that we are watching you. Our drones are hovering around day and night and we are monitoring closely any nefarious activities,” he said.

He stressed that the surveillance network extends across the state, covering both urban and suburban communities. “So be assured, on the mainland, on the island, everywhere, we are monitoring.”

Beyond drone operations, Lagos continues to maintain a multi-layered security strategy involving aerial patrols, intelligence gathering, community engagement and ground-based law enforcement activities.

“To add to this, our aerial surveillance patrols are still continuing. We have boots on the ground, we have eyes in the skies,” Ogunsan noted.

As Lagos continues to expand economically and demographically, the challenge of securing critical infrastructure, businesses, educational institutions and residential communities grows increasingly complex. Yet, the state’s embrace of technology-driven security solutions signals a determination to stay ahead of evolving threats.

For residents, investors and visitors alike, the message from Lagos is clear: security is no longer confined to checkpoints and patrol vehicles. It now extends to the skies above. And as drone technology continues to spread across the nooks and corners of the state, Lagos is building a smarter, faster and more proactive security architecture capable of sustaining the security, safety, development and prosperity upon which Nigeria’s economic future depends. In the words of the LSSTF chief, “Lagos is safe and will continue to be so.”
