Opening Remarks: A Vision for Excellence

The event commenced with a powerful opening speech by Dr. Oluyemi Oyebanke Taiwo, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of General Hospital Mushin. In her address, Dr. Taiwo emphasized the importance of turning the hospital’s vision into actionable strategies to elevate care and healthcare standards for the community. “To transform our vision into actionable strategies that will elevate our institutions,” she said.

Once again, I welcome you all to this general retreat and look forward to a fruitful and impactful session. Let’s make this a turning point in our journey towards healthcare excellence. Thank you very much. She concluded with the hospital’s slogan: General Hospital Mushin – Your well-being is our passion, and the Yoruba phrase, Ilera yin lo je wa logun.

Setting the Stage for Knowledge Sharing, the MC, after introducing Dr. Taiwo, praised her leadership, saying, If you listen to her carefully, you will notice the power in her voice. Thank you very much, Doctor. With the formalities concluded, the MC moved on to the next part of the retreat—an in-depth presentation on General Hospital Mushin’s history and services, led by Dr. Olumide Oniye, a seasoned medical professional and key player in the hospital’s strategic vision.

Dr. Olumide Oniye: A Glimpse into General Hospital Mushin’s Legacy

Dr. Oniye provided a comprehensive overview of the hospital, tracing its origins back to 2005 when it was established by the then Governor of Lagos State, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He shared that the hospital was initially a former secretariat before being converted into a medical facility. The first Medical Director/CEO was Dr. John Anisegun Osiyimika.

Dr. Oniye highlighted the hospital’s mission to deliver compassionate, affordable, high-quality healthcare services, leveraging technology and evidence-based practices to improve health outcomes for the people of Mushin and its surrounding communities. He emphasized that the hospital is committed to redefining healthcare excellence in Lagos State, ensuring that it provides innovative, accessible, and compassionate health services for all.

The Future of Healthcare at General Hospital Mushin

In a candid interview session following Dr. Oniye’s lecture, Dr. Taiwo discussed the hospital’s priorities for the coming year. She revealed plans to expand services beyond the general care traditionally offered, including the introduction of eye clinics, general surgery services, and enhanced ear, nose, and throat (ENT) care. The goal, she explained, is to provide comprehensive healthcare services without the need to refer patients to other facilities.

For any successful nation, healthcare is key Dr. Taiwo said, our aim is to provide not just one aspect of care, but holistic, all-inclusive treatment for the betterment of our community’s well-being.

Community Engagement: Strengthening Partnerships

The hospital’s focus on community engagement was another key topic discussed at the retreat. Dr. Taiwo emphasized that General Hospital Mushin works closely with the local government and the surrounding communities, including Surulere. Through partnerships with Primary Health Care Centers (PHCs), the hospital provides free diagnoses and treatments for those in need.

We are backed by the Local Government, and we collaborate with primary health care centers to refer patients who require more specialized services, she explained. Honorable Emmanuel Bamigboye, the Executive Chairman of Mushin, has been a father to this hospital. His support has been unwavering, and he continuously ensures that the hospital remains a priority for the community.

Sustaining the Retreat: A Step Towards Long-Term Growth

When asked about the sustainability of the retreat, Dr. Taiwo shared her vision for future editions. While this year marked the inaugural retreat, she expressed confidence that it would evolve into a two-day event in subsequent years. This would include more external facilitators to discuss a variety of crucial topics impacting both healthcare and the broader community.

Beyond today’s retreat, we are looking at expanding this initiative, involving more stakeholders and focusing on themes that will positively impact the community we serve, Dr. Taiwo noted.

Staff Engagement and Organizational Change

A nurse at the hospital shared her perspective on the importance of the retreat. She explained that under Dr. Taiwo’s leadership since July 2024, there has been a strong emphasis on organizational change, particularly in enhancing service delivery and improving staff attitudes. The goal is to ensure that both internal and external clients receive exceptional service and feel confident in the hospital’s ability to provide top-notch care.

We want our patients to trust us, to be confident in the care they receive, she stated. By investing in ourselves, we aim to provide a level of customer satisfaction that will make our patients loyal to us. Treating them well and with respect will encourage them to return and recommend us to others.

Using Patient Feedback for Continuous Improvement

One of the key areas of focus for the hospital is using patient feedback to continuously improve services. A nurse explained that feedback is not seen as criticism, but as a constructive tool for growth. The hospital values patient input and uses it to identify areas of improvement in care, ensuring that patients always receive the best possible experience.

Outreach Efforts: Strengthening Community Ties

The hospital has also been focused on improving its outreach efforts, particularly in terms of educating the public about the range of services offered. Nurses and staff have been actively engaging with the local community to increase awareness of available healthcare services, such as the newly introduced dental and eye care services.

“Since my arrival in April, we’ve been working to change perceptions and improve access to healthcare services. We’re getting closer to the community each day,” a nurse shared.By collaborating with the local government and engaging with the people, we aim to make a real impact on the health and well-being of Mushin.

Looking Ahead: A Vision for Healthcare Excellence

As the retreat came to a close, it was evident that General Hospital Mushin is on a trajectory of growth and transformation. With a committed leadership team, a clear vision for the future, and an unwavering dedication to the community, the hospital is poised to become a leader in healthcare excellence in Lagos State and beyond. The strategic management retreat marked not just a moment of reflection, but also a call to action—a reminder that healthcare is a shared responsibility, and the road to excellence requires continuous investment in people, technology, and service.

The next edition of the retreat promises to build on the foundation laid today, with greater participation and an even more significant impact on both the hospital and the communities it serves.

The event’s key focus was to discuss how health professionals can better meet the needs of the community and enhance the hospital’s role in the state’s healthcare ecosystem. Notable guests included Mrs. Monebi Idera Ayodeji, the Assistant Director of Nursing Services and a retired nurse with extensive experience in the field, as well as Mr. Dimeji Shonowo, an expert in financial management, who shared valuable insights into managing personal finances and preparing for retirement.

Mrs. Monebi Idera Ayodeji: A Call for Professional Excellence and Community Commitment

In her keynote address, Mrs. Monebi Idera Ayodeji an Assistant Director of Nursing Services, reflected on her vast experience in the healthcare sector, urging her colleagues to elevate their service delivery and approach to patient care. Having spent decades in the healthcare system, Mrs. Ayodeji spoke passionately about the importance of improving attitudes and the overall work culture within healthcare institutions.

She acknowledged that many members of the public had voiced concerns regarding the attitudes of healthcare staff, particularly nurses, citing complaints about a lack of empathy and professionalism. However, she highlighted the transformative changes that have occurred in recent years, emphasizing the hospital’s efforts to root out complacency and foster a culture of service excellence.

The healthcare system is one of the most critical aspects of society, Mrs. Ayodeji stated. We cannot afford to undermine it. Good health is the foundation of every other aspect of life. As workers in the healthcare sector, especially here in Lagos, we must be focused, disciplined, and uphold integrity. We are not just working for a paycheck; we are here to make a difference in people’s lives.

She continued, Nurses, in particular, must always remember that they are not just caregivers; they are the frontline of hope for many people. A simple smile, a kind word, or a moment of compassion can change a patient’s entire outlook on their treatment. The management of General Hospital Mushin is clear: there is no room for indifference or lackadaisical attitudes anymore. Every staff member is expected to deliver excellent care consistently.

In a heartfelt moment, Mrs. Ayodeji shared a personal story of a former patient who had reached out to thank her for the care she had provided during their treatment. This feedback, she said, was a reminder of why the work was so meaningful to her.

Mr. Dimeji Shonowo: Financial Planning for the Future

The retreat also featured an insightful session on financial planning, led by Mr. Dimeji Shonowo a seasoned financial expert. Mr. Shonowo delved into the importance of long-term financial planning, particularly for those in the healthcare sector, where the demands of the job often make it difficult for workers to focus on their personal financial wellbeing.

He began by addressing a common concern: the financial reality that many face after retirement. “We work from ages 25 to 60, but the reality is, we are going to live for another 25 or 30 years beyond that,Shonowo explained. What you earn from the age of 25 to 60 is what you will rely on for the rest of your life, and this needs to be planned for.”

Shonowo’s message resonated strongly with the audience, many of whom had given little thought to their long-term financial health. He advised attendees to begin saving and investing as early as possible, no matter their current income. “You cannot afford to wait until later in life to start planning for your retirement. It’s imperative to set aside savings from the very start of your career.”

He introduced the concept of “known knowns”and “known unknowns” in financial planning. Known knowns, he explained, include regular expenses like rent, school fees, and day-to-day living costs, while known unknowns refer to anticipated but uncertain expenses like increasing school fees or the cost of healthcare in the future. The most challenging, however, are the unknown unknowns, which include unforeseen life events such as illness or unexpected economic shifts.

Shonowo also emphasized the importance of financial discipline, especially in a volatile economic environment. He urged attendees to adopt a mindset of saving and investing for the future, advising them to prioritize essential financial goals like purchasing land or real estate to secure a stable future.

We have to stop living for the now and begin investing for the future,” he declared. “It’s not about owning expensive watches or clothes; it’s about owning assets that will sustain you in your later years. One of the most important investments you can make is in your own home. In Lagos, it’s essential to own property, because the reality is, you can’t retire as a tenant.

Interactive Q&A Session

During the Q&A session, a member of the audience inquired about the safety of investing in land in Lagos, given the concerns around property fraud and land speculation. In response, Mr. Shonowo emphasized the importance of due diligence and proper documentation when acquiring property. He advised prospective buyers to ensure that the land they were interested in was legally verified and free from disputes.

He also touched on investment strategies, recommending treasury bills as a safe and reliable investment for those looking to build wealth over time. Treasury bills, he explained, offer low risk and relatively stable returns, making them a good option for conservative investors looking to secure their future.

Conclusion: A New Era of Healthcare and Financial Awareness

General Hospital Mushin’s strategic retreat marked a significant step forward in both professional healthcare delivery and personal financial management for healthcare workers. By focusing on excellence in patient care and financial responsibility, the hospital is setting the stage for a new era of holistic health services that not only prioritize physical health but also the long-term well-being of those who dedicate their lives to care.

Keynotes and Speeches: A Unified Call for Improvement

One of the first speakers at the event was the Chairman of the Lagos State Health Care Commission, Dr. Atinuke, who emphasized the need for collaboration and forward-thinking in the healthcare sector. In her speech, Dr. Atinuke encouraged the attendees to “change, sit together, and discuss what needs to be done for the future,” stressing that effective healthcare delivery begins with thoughtful planning and dedication.

We must think beyond today, she stated, and God will endow you with wisdom to serve the community better.

Following Dr. Atinuke’s remarks, the Public Affairs Officer of Mushin Local Government Mrs Adebisi Aderinto, took the stage to introduce key officials from the Mushin Local Government Area, including the Executive Chairman, Honorable Emmanuel Olanrewaju Bamigboye, and the Vice Chairman, Honorable Tubosun Arowe. Aderinto highlighted the outstanding work of the Mushin Local Government, which recently won a prestigious award for excellence in governance.

I believe this award proves the exceptional leadership we have here in Mushin, said Aderinto. “We were in Abuja two months ago, and we received a car and a 10-seater bus as part of this recognition.

The Executive Chairman of Mushin Local Government, Honorable Emmanuel Olanrewaju Bamigboye, was the next to speak. He began by commending the healthcare workers at General Hospital Mushin for their tireless dedication, especially the Medical Director, Dr. Taiwo, whom he referred to as a “superwoman.” Bamigboye acknowledged that while many hospitals face challenges, General Hospital Mushin has shown remarkable progress due to its leadership.

Your hard work does not go unnoticed, he told the staff. God will reward your efforts, and we, as the local government, are here to support you.

Honorable Bamigboye also shared his vision for improving the healthcare system in Mushin by ensuring that additional health centers will provide more support to General Hospital Mushin, alleviating overcrowding and enhancing patient care.

Enhancing Service Delivery through Collaboration

One of the core themes of the retreat was improving service delivery, and Babatunde Adeolu, a seasoned expert in healthcare risk management, shared his perspective on the matter. According to Adeolu, providing exceptional service begins with internal satisfaction and motivation. He stressed that healthcare workers must be adequately supported and motivated to deliver the best possible care.

“Motivated staff equals motivated service,” Adeolu said. If we take care of our internal customers – the healthcare providers – they will, in turn, provide better care to our external customers, the patients.

Adeolu also discussed how collaboration between different departments, such as medical and social services, is essential to achieving high standards of care. He emphasized that effective communication and teamwork within the hospital are vital to ensuring that patients receive holistic and continuous care.

Balancing Innovation with Compassionate Care

A recurring theme during the retreat was balancing innovation with compassion in patient care. Mrs. Cole Adebukola Oluwabusayo, Director of Nursing Services at the Lagos State Health Service Commission, highlighted the importance of continuous training and maintaining a positive mindset among healthcare workers.

Every day when we wake up, we must ask ourselves: What do I want to achieve today? Do I want to make someone smile, or do I want to add to their pain?” she said. “Innovation comes with empathy. A smiling nurse can transform a patient’s day.

Perspectives on Public and Private Healthcare Systems

The event also featured discussions on the relationship between public and private healthcare systems. **Bolaoye Alalade**, a financial expert and auditor, spoke about the challenges and opportunities within the Nigerian healthcare system. He expressed confidence in Nigeria’s healthcare professionals but emphasized that more government support is needed to improve service delivery.

Lagos State is a case study for other states to follow, Alalade said. But we need to ensure that doctors, nurses, and all healthcare professionals are supported with the right resources and facilities.

When asked about performance evaluation in hospitals, Alalade suggested implementing a system where outstanding staff are rewarded based on clear criteria. He noted that proper management and reward systems help build a motivated workforce.

The Role of Stakeholders in Improving Healthcare

Throughout the retreat, stakeholders stressed the importance of community involvement in healthcare services. Adeolu explained that a stakeholder meeting, which includes representatives from the hospital, the community, and patients, is an effective way to gather feedback and improve service delivery.

We need to listen to the people we serve, Adeolu emphasized. By understanding their needs and expectations, we can develop service delivery standards that meet their needs.

He further explained that while private hospitals have more autonomy to adapt quickly to changes, the public sector, particularly government hospitals like General Hospital Mushin, are making significant strides in closing the gap. With increasing government support, General Hospital Mushin is expected to reach higher standards of care, positioning itself as a competitive alternative to private institutions.

Closing Remarks and Future Outlook

As the event drew to a close, the Medical Director of General Hospital Mushin, Dr. Taiwo, thanked the attendees for their commitment to improving the hospital’s services. She stressed the importance of collaboration between all stakeholders, including the government, healthcare professionals, and the community, in achieving sustainable healthcare delivery.

We are working hard to improve the quality of care, and with your continued support, we will make General Hospital Mushin a model for excellence in healthcare, Dr. Taiwo said.

The retreat concluded with a renewed commitment to patient care and a call for continued collaboration and innovation, ensuring that General Hospital Mushin remains a beacon of hope for the community. With plans in place for better infrastructure, more health centers, and improved financial management, the future of healthcare in Mushin looks promising.
