Liberty Kelechi Isaac, a Nigerian living in Ghana, has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to identify and prosecute the officers who extorted N3 million from him at gunpoint. Isaac, from Nguru Nworie in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, reported the incident to journalists in Owerri on Friday.

Isaac was in Nigeria to attend a friend’s traditional wedding in Bayelsa State when he and two friends were stopped by police at the Udi axis. The officers, brandishing weapons, forced him to transfer N3 million to them after physically assaulting him and threatening to shoot him.

Isaac explained that the officers, after accessing his phone and seeing a N10 million bank alert, demanded N6 million. Fearing for his life, he complied and transferred the money to two accounts: N2 million to Yusuf Mustafa of Moniepoint Microfinance Bank and N1 million to Jerry Ventures, also of Moniepoint Microfinance Bank.

He has provided the account details and consulted a lawyer, who has contacted the Bayelsa State Police Public Relations Officer. Isaac is demanding the return of his money and the identification and punishment of the corrupt officers.

Bayelsa State Police Command spokesperson Musa Muhammed has yet to comment on the matter.
