As John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Party’s Presidential candidate in last December’s Ghanaian election assumes office today, it is indubitable that he has entered the hallowed pantheon of distinguished African leaders with glowing antecedents.
Indeed, his second coming as President is a testament to his exemplary commitment to the enrichment of democratic ethos in this West African model nation.
Mahama’s legacies no doubt secured his second term in office.
Ghanaians didn’t forget that here was an incumbent President who lost an election to the opposition National Patriotic Party in 2016.
This uncommon but positive political development in Ghana’s chequered history convinced the electorate that Mahama was a transparent politician who had no skeleton in his cupboard.
On their own part, the NDC having realized that their Candidate remained popular despite the electoral loss in 2016, reserved the presidential ticket for him ever since.
There is already a consensus among the people that Mahama’s second tenure would provide an opportunity for him to continue the good work he did in the past and also translate his noble vision into a veritable vehicle for the transformative programmes he presented to the people. He should regard his overwhelming victory at the last poll as a pact with Ghanaian voters who expect him to deliver the dividends of democracy to the masses.
