President, Centre for Change, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin has urged the Federal Government to avert a total breakdown of law and order during the two-week lockdown extension.

The actvist made the call in a statement released on Tuesday and said the government should also look at measures that could reach a wider layer of the society like waiver on electricity bill.

“The extension of the lockdown by the President may be inevitable because of where we still are with COVID-19.

“It is observed that the mood of the President in his latest broadcast is different from what it was 14 days ago.

“And we expect the government agencies working on the COVID-19 pandemic to positively change their style in like manner.

“Government palliatives have not worked and you cannot say you are sustaining what is not working.

“There are better ways of reaching vulnerable Nigerians through the services of logistics companies to commence doorstep-to-doorstep delivery of relief materials.

“Government needs to get back to the drawing board while the people should be ready for more sacrifices but with support from government.

“The level of insecurity has become intolerable and the security forces must face this now, rather than the recourse to the bestial behaviour of beating, manhandling and extorting the vulnerables who are forced to venture out of their homes in search of what to eat.

“While we appeal to people to continue making sacrifices, the goverment should also be alive to its own responsibilities to citizens for, as they say, it takes two to tango,” the statement reads.
