Nigerian Lawmakers in the Green Chamber are set to begin debating the general principles of a bill that would repeal the Local Government Act of 1999. (as amended).
Hon Solomon Bob endorsed the bill, which is currently awaiting a second reading.
The sponsor of the proposed bill, which passed its first reading and was seen exclusively by Nigerian Tribune, wants to empower the State Houses of Assembly in each of the 36 states of the federation to establish local government as they see fit.
The bill’s sponsor wants to change the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Constitution of 1999, 2004 to remove local government as a tier of government that is constitutionally recognized and financed by the federal government.
The bill also proposes to add the following provisions to section 3 of the Principal Act’s existing subsection (2):
