Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, passed away on the night of November 5, 2024, in Lagos following a period of illness. His death was confirmed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who described him as a dedicated leader whose contributions to national security and inter-agency cooperation were profound. Lagbaja had not been seen in public for nearly two months prior to his passing, sparking earlier speculation about his health, which the Nigerian Army had previously denied.
Lagbaja, aged 56, was appointed Chief of Army Staff in June 2023 and was instrumental in advancing military strategies against insurgency and promoting professionalism within the Nigerian Armed Forces. His tenure focused on enhancing soldiers’ welfare, strengthening discipline, and improving operational readiness, particularly in areas affected by terrorism and other security challenges.
Born on February 28, 1968, Lagbaja joined the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987 and became a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps in 1992. He held several significant positions, including commanding roles in internal security operations across Nigeria, such as Operations Lafiya Dole, Forest Sanity, and Zaki. He was also an alumnus of the U.S. Army War College, where he earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies.
Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s passing has left a significant void in Nigeria’s security leadership, with tributes pouring in from across the nation for his dedication and service to the country. He is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children.
In a rare display of humility and respect for national unity, the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, has postponed the Gala and Award Night originally scheduled for Friday, November 15, 2024, in Abuja. The event, planned to mark the conclusion of the CGC Conference, was rescheduled to honor the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, whose sudden demise has left the nation in mourning.
A Thoughtful Gesture in Trying Times
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) issued an official statement explaining the decision to postpone the high-profile event. The statement emphasized that the move aligns with the Service’s desire to “identify with the mood of the nation in mourning the late Chief of Army Staff.” Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s passing has been widely recognized as a significant loss to Nigeria’s security architecture and inter-agency cooperation.
In a heartfelt condolence message, CGC Adeniyi expressed his profound sorrow, saying, “Lt. Gen. Lagbaja was a leader of immense dedication and sacrifice. His contributions to Nigeria’s security and inter-agency cooperation are immeasurable.” He further assured the bereaved family, the Nigerian Army, and all Nigerians of the Customs Service’s solidarity during this difficult time.
Recognizing Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s Legacy
Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, renowned for his leadership and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s safety, played a pivotal role in enhancing security and fostering collaboration among the country’s defense and security agencies. His leadership style and vision left an indelible mark, inspiring those he worked with and beyond.
CGC Adeniyi highlighted this, stating, “The Nigeria Customs Service acknowledges the weight of this moment, joining all who mourn the passing of a steadfast leader. The rescheduling of the Gala and Award Night allows us to pay our last respects to a man whose impact resonates across all security services and beyond.”
Unity in Mourning
The postponement of the event underscores the Customs Service’s acknowledgment of the nation’s collective grief. By delaying the celebrations, the NCS demonstrates a commitment to national solidarity, emphasizing the importance of mourning a leader whose legacy extends far beyond the Nigerian Army. The CGC conveyed deep condolences to the late Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s family, colleagues, and the broader Nigerian armed forces community.
Future Plans for the Gala
The Nigeria Customs Service reassured stakeholders, partners, and guests that details of the rescheduled Gala and Award Night will be communicated in due course. A Message of Leadership and Respect
CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi’s decision to prioritize the nation’s mood over organizational celebrations highlights his sensitivity and respect for inter-agency relationships. It serves as a testament to his leadership style, which places the well-being of the nation and its security above all else. As Nigeria mourns the loss of a remarkable leader in Lt. Gen. Lagbaja, the Customs Service’s thoughtful actions exemplify how public service institutions can foster unity during times of national grief.
